It’s sort of a dream come true if you have a home with a lawn. But do you know the basics of maintaining and taking care of your lawn? How exactly do you take care of a lawn so that it stays healthy? For all those people who have lawns in their houses, here’s what you need to do to keep your lawns fresh.
Some Basic Things for Lawn Care
- Always add soil as much as it’s necessary for leveling purposes. Use some good quality of lawn-mix soil instead of garden composts.
- To settle the soil properly, make sure you consolidate the cultivated ground by trampling and raking. In fact, heeling the soil happens to be the best way to ensure that the final surface of the lawn is firm enough to walk on.
- First, rake and then use a lawn-level board to smooth the surface and remove all the rocks and roots.
- Use starter fertilizer to enhance quick root growth.
Laying the Turf
Here’s what you need to keep in mind when you’re laying the turf:
- Always begin laying the turf along the longest straight edge
- The best way is to lay in a straight line so don’t bend it around the corner
- Make sure you press the edges and the ends of the turf firmly without stretching it
- Do not leave small strips at the outer edges of the turf because they will retain moisture
- Try to keep off the newly laid lawn
Sowing the Seeds
Here’s how you should be taking care of your lawn when sowing the seeds
- Always sow the seed and pre-plant fertilizer by moving backward across your lawn east to west. Then do it again by moving backward north to south. Use your hand or you can also use a spreader.
- Try to rake the seed lightly into just 10-25mm of the soil. Doing so keeps the seed moist even during the germination and stops the birds from eating the seed.
- Try to keep your lawn evenly moist during the germination period, because if it dries out at any stage, it will severely affect the outcome of germination. The best way to ensure that your lawn stays moist is to water it in the morning and afternoon, but not during the scorching heat of midday because it would evaporate all the moistness.
Mowing
- After 14 to 21 days of laying the lawn, you can begin mowing it. Make sure prior to mowing you should reduce irrigation so that the ground stays firm when you mow.
- Mow only 1/3 of the length after every 4 to 6 days during the first month and then do it weekly.
- During summer time mow the grass 5 to 10mm longer than the length you maintain when the temperature is cooler.
Lawn care isn’t a very easy task. It’s more like a full-time job which most of the people can’t attend to because of the busyness of their lives. So, if you want to revitalize the green spaces of your home creatively and responsibly then it’s best that you contact a professional landscaping company to take care of it for you.
