Don’t Ignore Your Lawn This Winter

Just because it is cold outside doesn’t mean you can ignore your lawn. Many people think that their lawn doesn’t require their attention during the cold months. However, this could not be farther from the truth. When the temperature drops, you need to pay even more attention to your lawn. The grass that turns brown in the cold won’t stay alive without your care. Follow the tips discussed below to care for your lawn this winter.

1. Water

Turfgrass is very sensitive to cold. Cincinnati winters are usually dry and cold, creating the ideal conditions for the turfgrass to freeze. It would die eventually if not watered properly. Too little or too much water can lead to problems. Therefore, during the winter season make sure to properly water your grass. During dry winter, give about ½ inch of water to your lawn.

2. Keep the Lawn Clear of Debris

If debris is left on the lawn during the winter season, it could lead to dead patches. It is important to remove the debris including leaves, pet feces and lawn furniture so that the hibernating grass can get the required water. Rake up all the dead leaves in your lawn instead of letting them stay there throughout the winter months.

If the debris is there and it snows, the adverse effects of the debris will get amplified and your lawn will suffer badly.

3. Minimize Foot Traffic

During the cold season, it is best to stay clear of your lawn except when you have to water it, cut the grass or carry out any other essential lawn maintenance task. When the grass is short and brown, you may think that foot traffic won’t hurt it. That’s not the case. Turf grass is normally resilient and sturdy, but greater foot traffic will damage it and make it hard for the grass to recover. Your lawn may look like a better option over slippery cement. However, try to resist the temptation of walking on it.

4. Fertilize

Fertilizing the grass during the early months of the cold season will help replenish important nutrients that may get lost during hot summer months. Even through the grass will be lying dormant, the roots keep on growing, and, therefore, require nutrients. Fertilizers applied during the winter will keep replenishing the roots all season long.

5. Treat the Lawn for Weeds

If you wish to keep your lawn safe from weeds, apply weed treatments in January. During the cold months, winter perennial and annual weeds are at the peak stage of growth while summer varieties of weed are laying inactive, waiting for the spring season to return in full force. Apply weed treatments during winter to kill weeds that are popping up for a sneak attack.

If you don’t have time to care for your lawn this winter or can’t afford to do this work because of the cold weather, hire H&T Services for lawn maintenance.
