Making the Most Out of Your Small Backyard

At H&T Services, we know that not everyone can have (or wants) a large backyard. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make the most out of your situation. Here’s 3 key steps when it comes to landscaping those smaller areas.

Use All of Your Square Footage
No matter how small your backyard might be, you need to maximize every inch you can. One way to do this is to create custom furniture that can will fit perfectly into the space. For example. H&T Services can build bench seating for your walls which will provide a nice place for you to relax while leaving more space for your garden and greenery to grow.
If you have nearly nothing in terms of outdoor space, window boxes can bring your landscaping to life as well. Whether it’s flowers or vegetables growing within them, the greenery will beautify your home and give you an outlet for your green thumb.

It’s All About Layout
Many times, the way things are laid out makes all the difference. Some people choose to plant grass in the middle of their yard while using flowers to decorate the outer edge, but if you don’t want to deal with mowing, you can choose to create a landscape solely made of plants. This is where layout comes in.
If you design on a diagonal pattern, it will make smaller spaces look spacious. For example, tile laid this way will force the eye across the entire space and make it look bigger than it may be.
You can also “build up” to make use of vertical space. By raising plants, decks, tiling, etc. you not only allow yourself more square foot, but also add more layers/dimension to your backyard.

Pick the Right Décor
If you have a small space to work with, the last thing you want to do is fill it with huge chairs or planters that are going to consume the area. H&T Services recommends that you opt for small, bright, eye-catching pieces that will make your yard pop without taking up too much real estate e.g. accenting with small lights that are strung at eye-level or repurposing unique household items into plant containers.
