Spring Has Sprung! Now What?

Spring is here! Well, sort of. In our Ohio Valley it can seem like spring one day and deep winter the next. Despite the oddities of our local weather, however, it's time to get outside and get ready for a new season. To help you get started, we've put together a Spring Checklist:
§ Clear debris -- Get your spring cleaning started by pruning late blooming shrubs and clearing out old brush and last year's mulch. Use it to start a compost pile.
§ Finish projects and structural repairs – It’s the perfect time to get that retaining wall repaired, gutters cleaned, water features installed and paving stones placed.
§ Lawn aeration – Aeration is to your lawn as repotting is to a root bound house plant. It is one of the least expensive and most beneficial things that you can do for your lawn.
§ Mulching and pruning -- getting this done now will get your landscape looking fresh throughout the early planting season. Curb appeal has no season.
§ Lawn fertilization -- this is a good time to get started, but don't overdo it. Start with a small amount now and later in the season, after the first rush of growth, apply a larger dose.
§ Pre-emergent weed control -- Mid-March is the best time to get ahead of the crabgrass and weeds. Your lawn and garden will look better and it will be less work for you in the long run.
§ Reseeding and watering -- new seed should go down in March and April. Be sure that the new seed is getting enough water to develop properly. There's a reason that April showers bring May flowers!
It’s a lot to remember and even more to do and if gardening and lawn work aren’t your thing the thought of planning and implementing all of this can be a bit overwhelming.
